Back In The Dayz: RZA and ODB

Speaking of Ol' Dirty Bastard, I found this old video of RZA and ODB at a talent show back in the day way before the Wu-Tang movement got started. I hope this wasn't a family talent show because it looks like they were trying "too hard" to win the show. Check it out yourself and enjoy. Trust me, you will enjoy this.

Sample Of The Week: Eddie Floyd "Check Me Out"

Hello Blog Heads! It's about that time for Sample Of The Week! Our sample of the week is Eddie Floyd "Check Me Out" from his 1973 album "Lay Your Head Down". As you can see, the album cover is a picture of Eddie with his lopsided afro and his Minister Farrakhan bowtie. LOL. It seem like Eddie was in a hurry and didn't have time to comb his hair to shoot the album cover. I guess it's good the way it is but anywho, this mellow, soulful sample was used by artists Missy Elliot, The Firm (Nas, Foxy Brown, Cormega and AZ) and Afu-Ra. These artists create their own moods that fits in perfectly with their words.

Here is Eddie Floyd "Check Me Out"

Sample Of The Week: Knight Rider Theme Song

Hey Blog Heads! Its another time for Sample Of The Week and the sample of the week is Knight Rider Theme song, which is composed and conducted by Stu Phillips. The good ol' David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight. Maybe Hasselhoff jams to the other joints that others created while driving the famous car "Kitt". Who can imagine that anyone can sample this song. When the song first comes on, it actually captures your ear. Artists from Timbaland & Magoo to Busta Rhymes used this tune to create their own versions. Once again, samples in hip-hop over the years are like fashion trends. Whenever something sounds hot, everyone wants a piece of the action.

Sample Of The Week: Sylvester- Was It Something I Said

It's time for sample of the week. Ah yes! One of my favorite sample loops. Just like people going along on what is today's hottest fashion gear, hip-hop always have a sample trend during a time period. I actually didn't know I had the Sylvester album "Step II" in my parents' record collection. It was first used by Big Daddy Kane on the classic joint "Taste of Chocolate" intro and outro from the 1990 album "Taste of Chocolate". This sample became hot again when Lil' Kim ressurected the sample on the song "Big Momma Thang" feat. Jay-Z from her 1996 LP "Hardcore". Through the next couple of years, artists from Yvette Michelle to Montell Jordan hop on the train to ride along this mellow, funky, groovy loop. I remember when i was in the 5th grade in late 1997 on Friday night coming from the barbership when my mom picked me up. I was rocking the waves with the line up cut on the left side of my head "Nas style". I turned on the radio station to Magic 102.5. They was playing Friday mix jam songs with a live DJ and all of sudden, Yvette Michelle "Im Not Feeling You" came on. I was jamming in my seat and turned the windows down. I was feeling good, smelling good and looking good with a fresh haircut while on our way to the mall. Then another song with the same Sylvester "Was It Something I Said" sample loop came on and I remember the words to the song " So get your groove on" (can somebody help me find out what the name of the song is. it would be a pleasure). But any who, I was dancing in my seat bobbing my head hard until my mom yelled at me to turn the windows back up because the wind was messing up her hair. LOL. Sorry for reflecting on my childhood, but anyway, here is the classic song from Sylvester "Was It Something I Said" from the 1978 album "Step II". Enjoy!

P.S. (Sorry blog heads. I was suppose to post this yesterday. I promise I will post Sample of The Week every Monday)

Go to 2:34 to hear the loop.

One of the live wires of the Wu-Tang Clan. ODB is actually one of my favorite members of the group. The father of "Lyrical Mischief" had brought crazy moments over the years. Here are my favorite moments from the Dirt McGirt himself. Let's see if ya'll can remember these moments. We'll always miss you Dirty.
